Current and Upcoming Projects

Airport Apron & Taxiway Reconstruction- COMPLETED OCT 2025

This project, funded through a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) grant, involves the complete reconstruction of the apron and taxiway at Wamego Municipal Airport. Construction begins August 15, 2025, with an estimated 60-day timeline. Once completed, the project will improve safety, efficiency, and long-term functionality for airport users.

Kaw Valley Road Cost Share Project

Through a cost-share grant with KDOT, the State of Kansas is contributing $1 million, with the City of Wamego investing up to $2 million toward the total reconstruction of Kaw Valley Road from Highway 24 to Say Road. Work will be completed in phases to help minimize traffic impacts near Wamego Middle School. Construction is expected to begin in March 2026 and wrap up by the end of that year.

TERS Project

In partnership with Flint Hills MPO and KDOT, this project will improve pedestrian access and safety. Sidewalks will be added along 6th, on the south side of the street from Ash to the exit of the park and on the north side of the street from Ash to Pine, and 8th Street filling in missing sections. Additionally, new pedestrian crossing lights will be installed on Kaw Valley Road at 15th Street and 17th Street, helping to create safer routes for walkers and cyclists.

Safe Routes to School Project

Funded by the State of Kansas, this project focuses on safer student travel routes. Improvements include new bulb-out crossings at the intersections of 7th and 8th Streets with Lincoln Avenue, reducing crossing distances and adding pedestrian signal lights. The intersection at 6th and Ash Street will also be reconstructed to square off the crossing, making it shorter and safer for pedestrians.

Annual Milling & Overlay Project

Each year, the City of Wamego invests in maintaining and extending the life of local streets by completing milling and overlay work on selected asphalt sections. This program targets areas most in need of resurfacing, ensuring smoother travel and protecting long-term infrastructure.

Annual Concrete Replacement Project

The City of Wamego routinely replaces smaller sections of damaged concrete throughout town and also bids larger-scale replacement projects as needed. In 2025, major work includes reconstruction along Columbian Road, Oak Hill, and the intersection of 15th Street and Lilac Lane. These improvements support safe, reliable travel across the community.

Old City Shop Demolition & Parking Lot Project

After years of planning, demolition of the old city shop is scheduled to begin in fall 2025. The project, coordinated with the State of Kansas and city engineers, will also include alley improvements behind City Hall. Once completed, the site will be transformed into a new parking lot serving the Wamego Aquatic Center and downtown businesses—targeted for completion before the summer 2026 pool season.

CCLIP Projects

Two Community Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP) projects are underway. The first is scheduled to begin in the fall/winter of 2025 and includes a total reconstruction of the southern entrance to Wamego, starting at the bridge and reworking to Valley. The second project is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2027 and will focus on milling and overlay from Highway 24 to 8th Street. These upgrades, supported by KDOT, strengthen Wamego’s infrastructure and enhance safe, efficient travel.

Utility & Infrastructure Projects

  • Electric Project: Four new CAT generators are scheduled to arrive by the end of 2025, boosting reliability and capacity within the City’s electric system.
  • Automatic Metering System: A new metering system and utility billing software will launch in January 2026, improving accuracy, efficiency, and customer service.
  • Water Project: The City is conducting a study to evaluate the need for an additional well to ensure a sustainable water supply for the future.
  • Wastewater Project: Plans are underway for a new wastewater treatment plant, designed to accommodate community growth and meet updated state regulatory standards.
