The Wamego Code Enforcement Department inspects new construction within the City for compliance with adopted building codes. It also enforces property maintenance and nuisance codes, all for the purpose of making Wamego a safer and more pleasant community in which to live and work. Following is a list of the adopted codes enforced by the Department:
Wamego residents are reminded to contact the City when contemplating any type of construction, including smaller projects such as fences, decks, storage sheds, street and curb excavation or sign installation. Many of these projects require a permit, and it is best to know your project complies with all City codes prior to incurring construction costs.
If you are a contractor doing work in Wamego, you must be licensed with the City. To license your business, you must provide proof of contractor’s liability insurance coverage in specified amounts, submit a two-year fee and provide requested contact information. The two-year period ends December 31st of even numbered years. In addition, all masters and journeymen in the following trades must be certified with the City of Wamego by presenting proof of passage of a State approved professional test respective to the trade, or by presenting a trade card issued by a city larger than Wamego, and by paying a two-year certification fee for each master and journeyman who will be working in Wamego. Affected trades are: electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, mechanics and drainlayers. Note that certified plumbers are authorized as drainlayers. All tradesmen must work under the umbrella of a licensed business, either as owner or employee, or contract with the business. In addition, all tradesmen must complete twelve hours of continuing education approved by the Building Official within the two-year licensing period.
