WAMEGO WATER UTILITY

The City of Wamego owns and operates a water distribution system, serving around 1,800 customers in Wamego and the area immediately outside the City. Population served is about 4,350.

The City pumps groundwater at four wells. Three tap into the Kansas River aquifer, east of Balderson Boulevard. The fourth well taps a different source and is located west of the Wamego Middle School. Well depths range from 54 to 82 feet, and pumping capacity ranges from 400-500, gallons per minute. Chlorine is introduced at each wellhead. The City also adds a polyphosphate sequestering agent to control lead, copper, iron and manganese levels in the lines. Pumping is automatically controlled by a telemetry system, based at the Power Plant 3rd and Poplar St.  As of April 1, 2004, the City began fluoridation of the water.

The City's elevated storage tower at Sunset and Country Club Drive has a capacity of 500,000 gallons. Distribution to customers is via a series of 12", 10", 8", 6" and 4" lines. Fire hydrants are located in all areas within the city limits.

Annual pumping averages around 200 million gallons. About 2 % is provided free of charge for park irrigation, public buildings and other public uses. The remainder is billed to residential commercial and industrial customers.

The water system is under the authority of the Wamego City Commission, and is managed by the Wamego City Manager, supervised by the Director of Operations, and operated by the Water Production and Water Distribution Departments. Billing and inquiries are handled at the City Office, located at 430 Lincoln St., P0 Box 86, Wamego, KS 66547-0086; phone: (785)456-9119; FAX: (785)456-2016.
