Wamego in 1996 is a city of the second-class with a population of approximately 4,000 people. It is governed by a five member Commission-City Manager form of government. Regular meetings of the Governing Body are held at the City offices the first and third Tuesday of each month. Citizens are welcome.
The first municipally owned light and power plant in Wamego was constructed in 1905. Prior to that time electricity was furnished by a privately-owned plant. By constant improvement and enlarging of the municipal plant throughout the years, the City of Wamego offers services equal to the ever increasing demands for electrical power.
The Wamego municipal water system was originally constructed in 1898. At that time there was installed a 60,000 gallon stand pipe, a quantity of small diameter pipe and a sufficient number of fire hydrants. The standpipe northwest of St. Bernard's School was a landmark of the Wamego Skyline for many years. Due to the increase in population in the past two decades, a new water tower in the Garrison addition together with new water mains and wells, were provided. The City also has refuse collection and sewage treatment facilities.
Wamego has a very fine Police "Department and a reliable Volunteer Fire Department. Wamego City Library has over 20,000 volumes plus access to hundreds more through the System Library Services from Manhattan and Interlibrary Services throughout the state.
Wamego is fortunate to have a completely modern Hospital staffed by competent doctors, nurses, and administrative help.
Our City Park and Old Mill Museum invite visitors as well as residents to enjoy the scenery. Many recreation activities are offered during the summer months through the Recreation Program administered by a commission of local citizens.
Wamego has often been designated QUEEN CITY OF THE KAW. Indeed she is that to the many fine citizens that call her home.
