What utility services does the City of Wamego provide?
The City provides electric, water and sewer services to City and some rural customers.
Does the City also provide gas service?
No. Kansas Gas Service provides gas. Their contact number is 1-800-794-4780.
How do I set up utilities with the City:
The City requires customers to come into the City Office, located at 706 Fourth Street (temporary location), to sign a utility application. The application must be signed and dated before service will be transferred into the new customer's name. This is also required for existing customers moving within the City limits. A signature is required for all households.
Will I have to provide a deposit?
Utility deposits are not required; however, all new customers must pay a nonrefundable activation fee of $75.00 plus tax for any new service established. This is required at the time service is established.
Will this activation fee be required every time I move within the City?
Yes. The activation fee is required for all services being established, even if you are just moving from one place to another.
What if I had a utility deposit on file with the City before the activation fee was required? Would the City still have it?
No. The City of Wamego refunded all utility deposits that were on file in April of 2005.
When are the utility bills due?
Utility readings are taken between the 12th and 17th of each month. the bill is processed at the end of every month and mailed so that the customer has it by the 1st of the following month. Payment is due upon receipt and delinquent after the 15th of every month. Sould the 15th fall on a weekend, customers have all day the following Monday to pay the bill without penalty. Penalties are 10% of the balance and are assessed the following day. Delinquent notices are mailed the same day as the penalties are assessed. These notices give customers approximately five (5) additional days to pay the full amount owing, before disconnection.
What happens if my services are disconnected for non-payment?
If services are disconnected for non-payment, services will not be restored until the balance has been paid in full with the reconnection fee and tax. The reconnection fee is $40.00 plus $3.22 in tax. These amounts must be paid with the current bill to reestablish service. Payments will need to be made in cash, money order or cashier's check on the shut off day. City crews will not reestablish services after 5:00 P.M. Payments and/or questions will be received after 8:00 A.M. the following day.
Can my service be terminated for non-payment in the winter months?
Yes. The City of Wamego is not K.C.C. regulated; however, we have established our own guidelines, stating that disconnection will not occur unless it is warmer than 35 degrees Fahrenheit in a forty-eight (48) hour period.
Can the City accept payments with debit or credit cards?
No, not at this time. However, you can set your payment up to be taken directly out of your checking account on the 10th of each month if you bank in Wamego.
What are the codes listed on my bill?
EL - electricity charges PT - water protection tax collected for the State of Kansas SE - sewer charges SP - space light charges (not everybody has this charge) SU - storm utility (for improvements to the storm drainage system throughout town) WA - water charges TX - tax
What is the gross bill and net bill on my utility bill?
The net bill is the amount due prior to the 15th of the month. The gross bill is the amount due after penalties have been established.
What if I pay my utility bill with a check and it is returned?
The City will pick the check up from the bank and notify you. You will be given a date to have the check picked up from the City Office. To pick the check up, you will need the full amount of the check plus the insufficient check fee of $25.00 in the form of cash, money order or cashier's check. If the check isn't picked up from the City Office by the date given, you will be subject to disconnection and all reconnection fees will apply.
Does the City pick up trash?
No. We will provide a list of private haulers.
Does the City have a place to take leaves and trash?
The City does have a burn pile for brush, grass and leaves. It is located at the Wastewater Treatment Plant which is just east of town on Valley Street. The county Landfill is located approximately four (4) miles north of town. the number there is 456-9706.
Does the City have any pet regulations?
Yes. The City requires that all dogs have rabies vaccinations and be licensed. New licenses for existing pets are available between January 1st and April 2nd with penalties. The City also has a leash law.
Does the City have a animal shelter or pound?
Yes. There is the Pottawatomie County Caring Hearts Humane Society dog pound. Weekly listings are given to the local papers and hung on the bulletin board at the City Office. Dogs are available for adoption from the pound. Currently there are no facilities for cats, but the Humane Society can help with feline issues.

When are City Commission meetings held?
City Commission meetings are held at 7:30 P.M. on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. The Wamego Senior Center is currently being used for meetings until City Offices complete their renovation. Work sessions will be held at the Wamego Public Library.
