The City of Wamego owns and operates an electric generation and distribution system, serving around 1,900 customers in Wamego and the area immediately outside the City. Population served is about 4,300.

The Municipal Power Plant, located at 3rd and Poplar St. has a maximum nameplate capacity of 12,495 KW. Eight duel fuel (natural gasl#2 diesel) internal combustion engines power the generators. The City also has an interconnection with KPL rated at 5,000 KVA (7,000 KVA with cooling fans).

Current practice is for the Plant to generate during the on-peak period: from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. from June 15th through September 15th. The Plant is also operational in the event of power outages during the off-peak season. At all other times the City purchases wholesale power from KPL available via the interconnection.

Power is distributed to customers over six 2,400 volt primary circuits and three 12,470/7,200 volt primary circuits. Distribution transformers step down the voltages to the customer's utilization voltages: 120/240 volt single-phase for residential and small commercial customers; 120/208 volt, three-phase for commercial customers; and 240 volt, three-phase for large commercial or industrial customers.

Annual sales total over 30 million KWH. In addition, the City furnishes about 700,000 KWH of free electricity for municipal uses such as street lighting, public buildings, etc.

The system is under the authority of the Wamego City Commission, managed by the Wamego City Manager, supervised by the Director of Operations, and operated by the Electric Production and Electric Distribution Departments.
