Public Works

In Wamego, the term “public works” means streets and alleys, storm drainage, public right-of-ways, parking lots, municipal buildings and equipment.  The Wamego Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining these facilities in a good and safe condition.  Specific tasks of the Department include street cleaning, snow and ice removal, alley grading, crack sealing, asphalt and concrete patching, storm drain cleaning/maintenance, traffic and street sign maintenance, repairs on public right-of-ways, marking pavement, municipal building maintenance, storm debris cleanup and noxious weed control.  The Department is also in charge of opening/closing graves and setting government markers in the Wamego City Cemetery and Catholic Cemetery.

Wamego has 26.2 miles of streets and highways within the city limits, including U.S. Highway 24 which is maintained by the State.  In addition, there are 4.3 miles of alleyways, most of which are gravel and require periodic grading.

The City’s storm drainage system is critical to traffic safety during storms, and plays a large role in enhancing pavement life-span.  Stormwater studies have identified areas where flooding may result in the case of a severe storm, and are helping the City prioritize future storm drainage projects.  Wamego has a stormwater utility to partially fund these improvements.  $2.00 is added to each month’s utility billing for residential customers, and $4.00 is added for non-residential customers.

The Public Works Department maintains a dump site for grass and lawn trimmings (NO BAGS!) just south of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.  Go ¼ mile east on Valley Road, then south on the Plant access road.  A burn pile is also located at this site to receive trees and branches.  Dumping of junk and trash is strictly prohibited!

The Public Works Department operates from the Wamego City Shop—415 Ash St.
